Honeymoon – ramblings

My honeymoon blog started as an update of our trip as it happened. It was usually written the day after it happened and I would post as soon as I could. As the trip went on I didn’t have the time to do that. Which means as the updates went on, I have forgotten a lot of the details of our trip. It was a few days late. Days turned into months and then the months turned into years. Which is a shame for us as we look back at these to remember the things we have done. While I have been doing the update to my blog, I accidentally posted day 11 as day 10 and skipped a whole day in my updates. Oops. I know a lot of people who look forward to their honeymoon – more than they look forward to their wedding. In some cases I am sure their honeymoon was the highlight of the two events. For us, I am not sure there will ever be a trip or experience …

Honeymoon – day fifteen

Our flight home is from Honolulu and that flight leaves super early in the morning. So today marks the official end of our honeymoon as tonight is about being near to the airport to get there in time. We leave have breakfast at the hotel. It is our first time ever having breakfast at the hotel. Dinner last night was our first meal ever at the hotel. honeymoon full of firsts even when returning to the same hotel. Our flight from Maui was in line with check out time so we didn’t have to rush. We fly to Honolulu and prepare for tomorrow. This time we are at the Halekulani’s sister hotel the Waikiki Park Hotel (now Halepuna). We have been a bit worried because the Halekulani was so nice. We just don’t know if we can be in Waikiki and not at the Halekulani. As soon as we check-in and get to our room, all of those fears are put to rest. One of the most amazing things on arriving in the room was …

Honeymoon – day fourteen

Maui, what can I say. We have arrived back at Hotel Wailea. We have relaxed. It is an amazing spot for a honeymoon. Quiet, calm, no more driving. Day fourteen is a sleepy day. We have come to paradise to sleep off the road trip. Not intentionally but what else is there to do now but relax. We had an amazing drive and now we have a pool, some time, a few great welcome and honeymoon gifts. I think we earned the right to slow down and enjoy a whole lot of nothing. Maui has always felt like the place that honeymoon dreams are made of. It feels like a honeymoon dream come true. We have done more interesting things and stayed at hotels that are probably a whole lot nicer but Maui just has a vibe to it. The collective beating heart can be felt in the air, a relaxed, friendly and happy atmosphere. Wailea breakfast We have breakfast/brunch in the shopping centre and laze by the pool. I nap more than Triston and …

Honeymoon – day thirteen

MAUI!! Hotel Wailea. Finally! We are back. So excited. Our first trip to Maui, back in 2009, we stayed at Hotel Wailea and loved it so for our honeymoon we knew we had to go back. When we first stayed we thought the hotel was more than lovely. There this intangible peace and tranquility about the place. Oh, and those rooms, we adored the rooms. Large, well planned, providing everything you needed. The rooms had a full kitchen including an oven, stove top, and a full-size fridge (with freezer). Our favourite part was the bathroom. I don’t know what it is about that bathroom exactly but we have compared every bathroom since to their bathroom. Held to the Hotel Wailea standard. Naming all of the things the hotel, apartment or house could have done better. We call it PHW – Post Hotel Wailea. I don’t know if their bathroom won awards back then but it should have. We were aware of a massive renovation and that the hotel had joined the Relais & Chateaux group. The condo rooms remained …

Honeymoon – day twelve

There was a massive debacle with the car not being ready and the valet desk being unattended in the morning and we find that our restless sleep during the night has turned out to be somewhat founded. Against all odds, we make it to the airport in time to check-in for our flight. Just. If we were flying in economy our check-in would have been closed. Being our honeymoon we had booked business/first-class tickets so we had an extra half hour to check-in and we arrived just 5 minutes before that check in closed. Rushed, stressed, flustered and uncomfortable, but, we made it so now we can relax. Our first flight is to Phoenix so we have to go through US customs here in Montreal, which is actually very hand and a great program but the officials aren’t the friendliest we have encountered. We decide it is because we are sweaty and stressed, we would have looked pretty suss so it is forgiven, they are doing their jobs and we do look and sound dodgier …

Honeymoon – day eleven

Hey guys, sorry, I missed a day when I posted this. You may have read this post as “honeymoon – day ten”. That has now been updated to reflect the missing post from the timeline. So you can read the new day 10 post here. Waking up in Quebec was a great feeling. We could take our time with everything today. Our road trip is now basically over and it has been the first time since we left Hawaii that we really could just relax. It has been a very pretty honeymoon but also exhausting. I wouldn’t change the trip for anything. We didn’t want to see much more than the old town itself and we saw almost all of it last night while deciding where to have dinner. At some point we have to drive to Montreal but it is just a few hours drive and check in isn’t until the afternoon anyway so we aren’t even thinking about any of that yet. Oversleeping was a bit of an issue until now, we had …

Honeymoon – day ten

We are sitting at about 9 and a half days since setting off on our honeymoon. Currently close to a week in Canada. Starting in Vancouver, we are now between Niagara Falls and Ottawa. We woke up in Sudbury, drove to Niagara Falls, had lunch and a look around. Now continuing on so we can sleep tonight. The drive to Ottawa is draining, long, unmemorable. I am sure it is actually a nice drive but we were full, tired and it had already been a really long day with hours left before we could rest. I book the hotel, we have been debating the hotel in Quebec so I had not yet booked the remaining hotels but on the drive from Niagara Falls, I decide it is time to book the hotels. Andaz Ottawa it is. We are Hyatt members and Andaz is a brand we have yet to stay in so we are excited to give it a try. I book online (though an agent log in, but essentially a retail rate – it …

Honeymoon – day nine

Continuing our honeymoon road trip we are back on the road. Mildly aware that we are running out of petrol. The car says we have enough left in the tank to get us 5km past Sault Ste. Marie. Service centres are just small local petrol/gas stations. They have generally been appearing just after we have gone around slow traffic so Triston refused to stop. Now it is a little bit desperate. We do not know what is ahead. The car estimate of 5km further than the distance to the next city doesn’t fill me with confidence. I proclaim that the next small town we go past or the next petrol station we see – we have to stop. I don’t care who we have passed or how long it took us to manage to overtake, we will stop. Slightly panicking, I start googling to see if there is petrol stations nearby and what towns lie between us and Sault Ste. Marie. I don’t easily find results on the highway. This makes me think we will …

Honeymoon – day eight

Oh deary me, why did a road trip honeymoon seem like the best option? It is kind of exhausting. Even our GPS is getting confused, well it was right but it sure did confuse us for a while. We got back in the car and programmed in Thunder Bay. Then proceed to be very confused about what the GPS is trying to tell us. It is 7:30pm and we have 1 hour and 10 minutes of driving left but we will arrive at 9:40pm. Eventually, we worked out we were not insane. We had crossed a state border hours ago but the timezone we are currently in is the Central timezone. Just before Thunder Bay, it changes again to Eastern Time which is 1 hour ahead. While it looks like mid-afternoon it was actually closer to 9pm that we hit the landmark of 90 degrees longitude West. The start or finish, depending on your point of view, of Eastern Standard Time Zone. Another quick pic or two as we watch all the cars and trucks …

Honeymoon – day seven

If you watched the video in honeymoon day six, you could see that the sun was setting quite quickly as Michelle finished up her droning for the day. Being daylight saving time, it was already well after 9pm. At this stage, we were still just outside of Regina with no solid plan on where or when to stop. We start looking at google maps to see some viable options, Winnipeg? Ideally yes, but no, it’s too late to drive that much further. Moosomin, another fantastic town name, just like medicine hat, but still in Saskatchewan, we need to at least make it into Manitoba. Virden, it’s on the right side of the border and a manageable drive of ~3 more hours tonight. Off we Set again, Triston at the wheel and Michelle logging into Expedia to find a cheap motel to get some much-needed sleep after the Banff debacles. Alas, no hotels are showing available online in Virden, we decide there probably are hotels available but with our arrival time and given they are likely small …
