The process to get from Tikehau to Bora Bora, is slightly complex but the complexities are going to be mostly handled before you set foot on Tikehau.
You may have read previously about the issue we had getting our Air Tahiti tickets in the first place. It took a bit of back and forth and to their credit, their first language is not English and I speak nothing but English and we go there in the end.
There is a pass you can buy but you have to fly in a clockwise circle, so Tahiti, Moorea/Bora Bora, Tikehau back to Tahiti would have been fine. We were doing Tahiti to Tikehau then wanting to go to Bora Bora. The reason it works one way and not the other is because there are flights from Bora Bora to Tikahau or Raingaroa but not back the other way. The meant we needed to fly Tahiti to Tikehau return, which isn’t really the idea of an air pass.
Luckily one agent told me it could be done, we just need to pay an additional fee for the transit in Tahiti. It does mean we take extra time because we can’t just jump on a direct flight down to Bora Bora. We need to first fly to Tahiti and then wait, oaf about, eventually getting our flight to Bora Bora.
The process on the day is boat and then van transfer to the flight to Tahiti. Wait at the airport, followed by another flight and boat transfer. The boat docks right at the resort, a short walk to reception so no Van required on Bora Bora.
We got the boat, van, flight, we waited and we got the second flight. Now on Bora Bora, we wait. There are other people on the flight we arrived on going to our resort but they are taking a lot longer to get their bags. We can’t leave until everyone is ready.
It turns out we actually are waiting for another flight to land as well. We lose all of the remaining daylight in the waiting. I guess this is why they reccommend going clockwise.
We saved thousands of dollars on the hotels by flying this way around, we hit the cheaper season for the hotel. It cost $150 extra a person but we saved $3200 off the hotels. We wouldn’t have bothered with Bora Bora if we couldn’t get the low season pricing on Tikehau and a free night on Bora Bora. So for us it was worth going to Tikehau first. Although right now I am truly regretting Bora Bora.
We have successfully managed to get from Tikehau to Bora Bora. We have arrived. Now to see if the most famous of the French Polynesia islands can live up to the hype.
